The yearly calendar
Franklin's annual traditions.
The festivals and traditions worth planning your year around — the ones that come back every year, roughly when they happen, and what they are. Exact dates land on the calendar as each one nears.
Mid-March through Earth Day
AT Spring Celebration
Franklin is an official Appalachian Trail Community at trail-mile ~110, and every spring it throws a weeks-long welcome for northbound thru-hikers — trail magic at Deep Gap, the Hiker Chow Down, free pancake breakfasts at First Baptist, and hiker specials at Lazy Hiker, Currahee, Outdoor 76, and the Rathskeller.
The Saturday before Easter
LifeSpring Easter Egg Drop
A helicopter drops some 10,000 Easter eggs over the field at South Macon Elementary, plus bounce houses, free food, and face painting. Free, family-mobbed, and exactly as fun as it sounds — hosted by LifeSpring Community Church.
April 6
Tartan Day
Franklin leans into its Scottish roots — a scone-baking contest, fried haggis, historical sword demos, and pipes on Main Street, hosted by the Scottish Tartans Museum. Marks the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath.
Early May
Sweet Carolina Music Festival
A family-friendly country music festival at Veterans Memorial Park benefiting the Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Center — live music, line dancing, cornhole, and food trucks.
Mid-June · Father's Day weekend
Taste of Scotland & Highland Games
The big one — 25+ years of clan parades, pipe-and-drum bands, Highland games, ax throwing, and Scottish food, plus a free Friday-night Ceilidh on Main Street and a Sunday Kirkin' o' the Tartans.
Early August
80s Flashback Weekend
Downtown goes full 1980s for a weekend — a parade, a 5K, and live concerts on Iotla Street, all benefiting Shriners Children's. It's grown from a few dozen people to a couple thousand; big hair encouraged.
Mid-September · four days
Macon County Fair
The real, farm-rooted county fair since 1960 at the Wayne Proffitt Ag Center — livestock shows, giant pumpkins, quilts and baked goods, a harvest sale, and a BBQ supper. No carnival rides, just the genuine article.
Third Saturday of October
Franklin PumpkinFest
Downtown's flagship fall street festival — the Pumpkin Roll down Phillips Street, a costume parade, ~100 vendors, hundreds of local pumpkins, kids' activities, and live music. 9 AM–4 PM.
Late October · three days
Leaf Lookers Gemboree
Franklin's fall gem & mineral show at the Carpenter Community Building — national dealers with jewelry, rough and cut stones, fossils, and lapidary gear, plus Gem & Mineral Society displays during peak leaf season. $3, kids free.
First Saturday of December
Cowee Christmas
A holiday craft market and family day at the Cowee School — about 40 local makers, Santa at 11, Cherokee storytelling, live music, and a $10 soup lunch. Free, 10 AM–3 PM.
Early December · every other (even) year
Cartoogechaye Live Nativity
Cartoogechaye Baptist recreates the town of Bethlehem with live animals — a walk- and drive-through living nativity that's drawn crowds for 15+ years.
December 31
New Year's Eve Ruby Drop
Franklin's New Year's Eve tradition — an 800-pound lighted ruby lowered from a 60-foot crane on Main Street, a nod to the gem-mining heritage. A family-friendly drop at 9 PM and the real thing at midnight.
